I really hate ice storms, and am not looking forward to winter much. Usually I guess the UK is protected by being so maritime, except for hurricanes and gales---but they don't bring icy precipitation much just a lot of rain.

Yes, the winters here are usually quite mild, when you consider how far north we are. 
But the winter of 1962-63 really was exceptional.

Thanks, we have a tight house that is easy to heat, although there isn't good air circulation---so we might need to leave the air conditioners and fan going just to keep the air moving a bit.
