Staircases and CAD software are the are the bane of more than one of us; A2284148
Not only do I have to initially design handrails to the architect's plans, I also have to lay them out again after the actual measurements of the building are taken, before we can begin fabrication.
The biggest problem is that buildings are designed to give the minimum space they think is required for a staircase, however we have certain edge clearances that have to be maintained to meet the required loads.. 
I have laid out hundreds (if not thousands) of staircases in the last 35+ years, I have one underway on my office computer even as we speak!

Oh, dear. 
You really should compare notes with Tavaron, then. 
My main beef with old staircases is that the newel posts always come loose. Why is that?
