There's also an American colony of ponies established on an American east coast island, where they have an annual roudup and auction to keep the population down something supportable on a basis of island resources, nowadays recognized as a breed distinct from the ponies of the UK.

I'm going to need to do some research into the paleontology of the horse.

Apparently the major horse migrations to the old world from America came at the beginning of the last ice age and I don't know exactly how long they persisted in America before going extinct.

I do know that they were the principle meat animal of the Magdalenian culture that supplanted the Neanderthal and Cro-Magnon cultures in Europe.
