Saw a 3"/7.5cm sphinx moth caterpillar burrowing into the desert sand this morning.
On the "Parktown Prawn", called locally the 'potato bug',for no discerible reason, there are at least two very similar species native to southern California, both of them notable for being among the slowest moving arthropods in the local environment and for being 'between meals snacks' favorites of the local coyotes which will turn sticks and boards laying on the ground over, looking for them nesting underneath.
