Ahem. My inspirations for this opus were:
Bluebottle, whose local knowledge of the Isle of Wight is peerless.
The late Sir Terry Pratchett, whose footnotes I admire so deeply.
The date. (See above.)
Herewith more than you ever knew you wanted to know about Pittsburgh.
And yes, I explained the Latin part of the title...

Excellent entry
(I still consider myself as someone scratching the surface of Isle of Wight local history – there are always surprises...)

This is a great sprint through history.
I got a bit confused about Pittsburgh's place in Pangea. You said that the world was one big continent (Pangea) about 250m years ago. And that the Carboniferous Age lasted about 60m years from 359m years ago. So was Pangea around in the Carboniferous Age?
In the section 'War (What is it Good For)' you said the French held Fort Duquesne for 3 years, then the British took it back. So how comes the French were in a position to burn it after the Treaty of Paris?
Sorry if I'm being dim.

Well, I didn't want to get into too much detail.
Yes, the Carboniferous Age apparently coincided with the late stages of Pangea, or at least, that's how I read it. Geologists, correct me if I'm wrong.
As far as how the French were in a position to set fire to Ft Pitt, I'll see if I can dig up details - they could've just snuck up one night, but I suspect they were in possession, some way. Good question, I'll try and find out.

Thank you, MVP - I think I have it sorted now. My source obviously confused two incidents - the French set fire to Fort Duquesne when they saw they'd lost.
I hope that makes sense now.

So is it Pittsboroughers or Pittsburghers, or is there a difference?

Oopses for blank post
Looks like a great entry - Pittsburgh should be glad of its sprint through history!
I do like the phrase "Sub specie aeternitatis" (although I like the slightly altered translation of "from the perspective of the Eternal)
