The north American tomato hornworm, or sphinx moth.
Definitely a menace to tomatoes and eggplants, not so far as I've ever seen reported to bee hives.

The caterpillar, full grown, is typically about 12cm in length by 1cm in diameter.

Hi there! Thanks for these. We also have ones that look very much like these ones over here ... indeed, we have lots of hawkmoth species. The adult looks somewhat reminiscent of our Silver Striped Hawk Moth: http://ukmoths.org.uk/show.php?bf=1993
