Dmitri sent me this next tidbit of info about the use of these moths in the movie 'The Silence of the Lambs':

"According to the director - at least, this is what we found in an interview once - the moths in the film were not the right ones. In fact, they were another species in 'makeup' - the markings painted on. The reason? Pittsburgh weather.

It seems they'd tried to film in Pittsburgh in the winter, much too cold for the moths, who died. Unable to get new ones, they faked it and used moth actors...thought you might like that.

Also, the moth in the novel isn't a Death's Head Hawkmoth, but the Black Witch, a New World species that I suspect Thomas Harris - who's from the Mississippi Delta - knew about. Just as scary, I think."

The Black Witch is a species in the Owlet Moth family, large, dark and beautiful. In Mexican and Caribbean folklore it's considered a harbinger of death, or even a lost/restless soul itself.

Thanks Prof! You'd get more fun out of the caterpillars I think ... they're big and spectacular and 'cuddly'. My cat Poplap used to catch hawkmoth caterpillars in the garden (a different species, not the Deaths Head ones) and bring them into the house unharmed to play with them.

I have a certain tuba/spreading plant - grows from nothing each year (don't know namesmiley - biggrin)and that has its residence caterpillarssmiley - smiley
apparently, its a small fly and the eggs drop to the ground and hatch once the plant has grown, so loads of the caterpillars have a food supply smiley - winkeyethe plants flowers - leaves get eaten. Plants dies off and all recycle the following yearsmiley - smiley
