Lincolnshire history - if I can get to Louth sometime soon I will photograph the plaque on St James Church for this entry.

Excellent, and a good read!
I think I remember the York part in a series? Didn't Sean Bean play Robert Aske?

No! That's good!
I think it's high time people found out what used to happen before embalming.
Also, you're right in line with the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle's rant about William.

I presume you mean Henry
Thank you! I did want to hit the right tone.
I have been wondering if that's why guards surround Royal coffins laying in state nowadays (to keep the dogs away).
It might be fun to write up Henry's funeral.

Hey, great idea!
No, I meant William - the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle did not like him. They went on a rant about how he thought he owned the world, now he had six feet of dirt...I don't think The Conqueror exploded, though.
I ran into a 19th-century newspaper account of an exploding corpse, too. Not fun.

I understand now
I wrote up Princess Charlotte of Wales to explain the term "heir and a spare", her parents were Prince George (later King George IV) and Caroline of Brunswick - she whom Blackadder described as having the worst personality in Germany, so the entry grew and grew... while I was researching I heard about the debacle that was Caroline's funeral, not long after George was crowned and had her banned from attending the coronation, he also tried to prevent the funeral procession passing through central London, that had to be a separate entry, once I started I couldn't stop!
I love royal history.

I just told Andy about our discussion about the exploding corpse - he said it was probably the After Eight mint that did it for him
That's a way to include a Monty Python link if ever I saw one

Well, I can supply the actual sketch link, but viewer discretion is required it's not to my taste, and I didn't get the joke either, I am not a Monty Python fan

The number of comments on this video to the effect that this is funny are fairly discouraging. Also the comment that Quentin Tarantino found this too much...

William the Bastard's body really exploded on his death, and another gruesome fact is that his son William Rufus was so hated by the Almighty that when he was buried in Winchester Cathedral the tower fell down upon his body. His skull was later used as a after the Civil War when Parliamentarians kicked open all the royal coffins in Winchester and played with the bones.

I was in the New Forest for a run and someone else there came up out of the blue and said, 'We owe the New Forest's existence to William the Conqueror. Did you know his body exploded when he died?' So definitely well-known fact.
