The trouble with writing now is that many of the best descriptions have been used.
So, when Mark Twain wrote 'My heart jumped up amongst my lungs', that was good. If you wrote that now, you'd be accused of being cliched.
Our writing tutor's recommendation was to concentrate on the details of the scene - the sticks cracking, the smoke rising from the fire etc, rather than too much about the feelings of the protagonist.
