The Christmas Poem: Dear Chancellor

0 Conversations

We are pleased to offer a selection of poems from the Create Seasonal Poetry Challenge this December: to write a poem about a gift.

Minorvogonpoet addresses her gift to a member of her government. We hope he appreciates it.

Dear Chancellor

I thought I’d treat you to this piggy bank,
encourage you to take much better care
of people’s cash. It’s ours and you should thank
us for our contributions. We’re prepared

to share with family and friends. But you
take more than we can manage. Keep it tight
in this piggy – deep blue to suit a true
conservative, a single star, for you might

not merit more. It’s comfortably round
like your friends the bankers. Its chubby face
is lacking smiles, for few of us have grounds
for cheerfulness, these dreary days. It has space

for many coins and rolls of sterling notes
(not Euros, for we never trust that stuff)
because it’s empty. It contains no votes
for your governing party. It’ll be tough

for you to win our trust a second year.
Like us, you face the future steeped in fear.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
