C++ was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup as a replacement for the C programming language1. It is intended to provided elements that C lacks, such as object orientation and complex data structures, while maintaining some of the efficiency of C2.

1In C, C++ means increment C by one. So C++ is C, one better.2The debate is still open as to whether it succeeds or not.
