Tarka Trail

The Tarka Trail is a 180 mile long footpath in a figure of eight configuration stretching from Lynton and Lynmouth in the north of the County to Okehampton in the south and including parts of Exmoor and Dartmoor. The sections between Barnstaple and Braunton and Barnstaple and Meeth have been converted into paths/cycleways using the trackbeds of the closed railways in the area.Sustrans, the national cycle network, has some input into the cycleway,I believe, and Devon Countryside Service - part of Devon County Council - also maintain the path from their base at the old Bideford station.
Bideford and Instow Railway group have their HQ at Bideford and also maintain the signal box at Instow which is a listed structure.

Forgot to mention in my initial piece that the Exeter - Barnstaple rail line is promoted as The Tarka Line and the section between Eggesford and Barnstaple is part of the Tarka Trail itself.

Hey Compo, do you s'pose there's any mileage in doing a separate Tarka Trail entry? You certainly know your stuff, and I'm sure there's plenty more to write on the subject.
