The proposal is that the new h2g2 will be have a charitable Foundation as part of the whole caboodle. Complicated to explain right now as it is in the beginning stages of being formulated. Basically the intention of the Foundation is to promote world-wide literacy in all sorts of ways, including the literary aspects here in h2g2.

Solnushka is the driving force behind this initiative, and the (interim) Guide Editors are working in liaison with her.

Other volunteers will be needed too smiley - biggrin

This thread is to find a good name for the central contact point on h2g2, and/or a good name for the page/s dedicated to hosting ongoing writing challenges which will be devised to aid and support writers of all abilities.

It's quite open ended right now - but a creative name (for the central Feature on h2g2 ) would be a starting point.

Some of these challenges could be in the form of writing prompts, some may be dedicated to writing fiction, poetry, or for the Edited Guide. We envisage schemes where we can host collaborative writing, for the Guide, or encourage writers to confidently produce Journals. This is all on the drawing board at the moment, - other challenges are available smiley - winkeye including competitions.

I might like to be involved with this.

I had an idea for a kind of ironic name smiley - snork given that it's about literacy. But it is also literary.

Some variation or whatever on..

'Get righting' Well we do talk about the 3Rs. Reading Righting and Rithmatic.

Glad to see such interest! To add to what lanza has said (there's an announcement coming up relating to these threads which is why they are a bit cryptic at the moment) I'd like to start small and work up to that sort of thing, and I'd like to start with regular smallish challenges rather than outright competitions, although I do take your point about the motivational usefulness of (small) prizes.

During the transition period, then, it would work, I hope, a bit like memes do in blogland, where the fun of it is seeing how other people have responded to this week's prompt. It would be targetted at the moment, at current users and (perhaps especially) new users, and I'm hoping that people would participate partly because we do know each other and are nosy and partly (in the case of newbies) because we want to get to know each other).

HOWEVER, we would need to run at least one competition in that time to see how we could organise them successfully (We've been getting some feedback from Bel and the Post team on the trickiness of running comps here) AND we would really want one nice big outward facing comp to coincide with when we think h2g2 is finished transitioning and ready to take over the world. Which is where this could really come into its own.

Anyway, what we need volunteers for is partly to think up the challenges and sort out an a page describing them (I envisage that people could leave links to their entries under this page so everybody could go and read them and , hopefully, comment - not in a peer review kind of way - although we will have EG challenges so that would be in a peer review kind of way, but more generally).

But we also need people to participate regularly, both in submitting and in commenting and answering questions, too I suppose.

And in admin for the comps when we get there.

Solnushka, I didn't understand a lot of that..but I still want to try to be involved in some way..hopefully I'll gradually get some idea how the system works. i'll try not to panic about it though.

When there's an actual *real* thing happening hopefully it'll be clearer and I'll know if i can offer anything.

Sorry to take a while to get back to you, Effers. In post 65 in the other thread, I've tried to give a more concrete eg of how it would work and what is needed (the first bit of the post is a response to some of the previous discussion): http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/brunel/F21537567?thread=8263104&post=109955321#p109955321 I know you are a visual arts person, so any ideas for challenges/ tasks/ exercises we could set people in that realm would be very welcome.

Okay will be on it later. I'm not just visual arts. Started writing poems at 7. And have worked my way through many of the classics of English literature and poetry. Big fan of Shakespeare.

I'm quite eclectic as an artist.

My brain doesn't work so well online for some reason to do with the systems.

That's why I don't want to panic if I can't initially get a grip.

I'll try later.

No worries, and there's absolutely no hurry. If you have an idea in a month, six months we'll still need it. More probably as we'll have used up all ours!

My brain works better for letting things brew quietly for a while in my subconscious too.

No its not that. i can have quick or slow ideas.

Its the whole way this site is organised. The structural systems. Its very hard to explain. But once I see it up and running for *real* it'll be easier.

Actually having read post 65 I'm not sure this is for me. I'm not being critical of what you are doing..but it seems all very fixed. I'm used to jamming.

But actually I'm starting to realise the problem is mine. I find online difficult for project stuff. i can't feel it..it's all so in the head.

But I won't give up entirely. Like I say once its real I maybe can deal with it.

But I just can't get it as something really creative.

But there maybe something creative on noohootoo I can do..that feels honestly creative to me.

I'm trying to be honest with you..not critical of what you are doing. I really do think its my problem to do with online structures and systems. But lets see.

I'm encuraged here, Solnuschka - lots of h2g2ers with lots of ideas. smiley - biggrin Good start.

Just to throw in a suggestion:

How about 'Write the World'?

As some of your commenters have pointed out, you want to be fresh, new, inclusive, and definitely not the same-old, same-old. smiley - winkeye

Design A Challenge

I hope we use a name that doesn't tend to restrict the challenges to writing only.

Aha. Good idea - not assume it's writing.
