A Conversation for H2G2 Researcher Code - Version 1.0

Stars and Dollars and Hats...

But surely since HHGG started as the radio series, to omit that is a denial of all that the concept has become. It was because of the popularity of the original radio series that the TV series was commisioned, that Pan approached DNA to write that first book, that the records were made, that the stage plays were produced, that the towels were fabricated, and, ultimately, that this website exists at all!

It all starts with the radio series. And so that is where a true geek would begin.

But a true geek would subscribe to the Geek Code, and not this smiley - nahnah

I still don't think the fanbase is big enough. And I think it's possible to get _too_ DNA-obsessive, without concentrating on h2g2 itself, which is what this is supposed to be about.

But I'm still not happy with how you split up the world. RNO for Norway, RNL for the Netherlands, RSE for Sweden and especially RGB for you gits would be so much better. smiley - smiley
And I think that if you're going to veto the radio shows you should ditch TV as well and have a single cathegory for all things HHGTTG.

It's your fault you didn't get round to doing it first.

"I did consider the radio series, but thought it probably didn't have a big enough fanbase."

It seems implausible that a person could be pedantic enough to learn this code, appreciate it and use it, but not be pedantic enough in their Hitchhiking experience to know anything about the radio series.

As for fanbase, surely if "nighthoover" deserves a code, then the radio series deserves one! I've been fairly active on h2g2 for a few years, but I would have to use the code "nh????".

*off to search for "nighthoover"*

I think F19585?thread=143046 would answer all your questions. Find out how cults start.

Leastways, I am now regarding Version 1.0 of the code as being complete. Obviously, all new, acceptable suggestions will be including in Version 1.1 ad lib.

Tell your friends!

Well, I'll be using a 'RS' category in my h2g2 code, and will continue to do so until one appears either in v1.0 or 1.1 smiley - nahnah And I'll be encouraging everyone else to do the same smiley - run

Equally the definition of 'TV+ It's funny, and faithful to the original books.' is totally incorrect. The benchmark for the TV series is whether it is faithful to the original radio series. The books came after the TV series. It can't be faithful to something that didn't exist beforehand!

Which also means that the order of the books and TV series should be swapped around in the code.

The radio series was the best version, by the way. RS forever!

Alright! One thing, though - if you use an RS tag, you'll imply that you are a Scandinavian Researchers smiley - biggrin

I'll put it in as an 'r' tag. Happy?

smiley - cheers for adding radio! [Not that I'm enough of a geek to actually memorize or use the h2g2 code for myself... just enough of a geek to criticize it.]

Re: nh, yeah right, I'll get back to you next May when I finish reading those F19585?thread=143046 1522 posts on the subject!

Question: maybe this applies to Geek Code in general, but does the order of the codes matter? For example, it might make sense to show radio code, then tv, then books, if they were published in that order. The advantage for maintaining an official order in the code blocks would be that people would be accustomed to reading it in that same order every time -- plus it helps you become more of a geek by showing that you maintain that order, or proves who is not a geek when they put things out of the Official order. Of course, it still communicates the same things no matter what order you put them in.

Believe it or not, I have actually tried to put the categories in some sort of logical order. Geggs might have argued me into submissions over the radio series issuesmiley - cross, however I was determined to have the last word.smiley - winkeye

I decided to put those three categories in order of popularity. There's many non-Brit Researchers who will probably never get beyond the books, simply due to lack of access. And the TV series is more widely known here than the radio series - hence that order.

BTW, I wouldn't expect anyone to memorise the code, just write out their own version with a handy link to this page - spread the word, so to speak.smiley - ok

With any luck, someone Java-proficient might write us a decoder.
