Since I from an early age, I have always found the r impossble to pronounce. I learnt very basic French at school and starting to learn it again. I am good at remembering phrases but pronounciation very poor especially the letter r. BTW I cannot whistle.

2 tips:
The explanations given is this entry regarding pronunciation of the letter "R" in French are pretty good. Unfortunately, they are rather technical (which I don't think could be avoided) and it might put you off trying. However, I happen to know a couple of tricks that probably won't produce instant miracles but will hopefully help a little.
tip 1:
-Say something in English (short sentence)
-Repeat the process putting on a fake French accent, like if you were taking the p*** out of us Frogs when we try to speak English (Inspector Clouzeau job).
-Try the same with a short French phrase, keeping same mental attitude.
tip 2:
-When learning the "R" sound, in the beginning, you will always do better with words in which "R" is placed right after another consonant (bras, crème, train, etc).
