A brief guide to czech beer

Let it be said,Czech beer is good stuff,but if your used to english style lager it might take a bit of getting used to.First of all,don't go to the bar and order,remember,your in europe now!When your beer arrives in a half liter glass it will probably have a couple of inches of head(more as you travel north),don't worry,it doesn't effect the amount of actual beer in the glass!!Also you will no doubt notice that there are no bubbles or virtually no bubbles which means no gas.In an english pub,your customer would probably complain that his beer is flat,but here in Czech thats the way to drink it,and trust me,its much better.Czech beer goes down like cordial and you don't feel like a helium balloon afterwards.
Ofcourse there is good stuff and bad stuff.In my opinion the top brands are Pilsner urquell,Gambrinus,radagast and Krusovice.Staropramen tends to upset the stomach.There are hundreds of varieties and some are confined to small areas such as the excellent krakonos,only found around Trutnov,and primator{slightly sweet)brewed in Nachod,close to where I am.
Now price is where drinking beer in czech really comes into its own.In the provinces in a local pub you can expect to pay about 15K for half a liter,thats about 30english pence.In Prague you can pay alot more if your a bit goofy and like hanging out in tourist swamps.I drink an excellent Primator 10 in Nachod for 10k or 20 english pence.So good drinking chaps!
