Pinniped has a Lad-mag outlook on life most of the time, so I decided it was time someone wrote the copy

Must have been quite cold and dangerous out there when you did the research, but after all, it was rewarding

I liked this, a lot. And the next time a seal comes over when I'm swimming I shall know what it is that has always worried me about that.
If this is too much for the edited guide despite being eminently instructional, educational and factual, it has my vote for the Underguide-to-be.

Thanx Waz!
Shazz took it for the Post about a month ago, in fact.
BBC Radio 4, by coincidence, had a week-long series of afternoon slots about the travails of a seal called Selkie, attempting to pull in the coastal waters of Scotland.
Loser.
Pin at least TALKS a better act, so into the Post it went to counterpoint R4's rather limp attempt to do a sound-only pseudo-Attenborough.
Anyhow, I should take it out of AWW, now it has a home. Thanks for the reminder, too!
P.

Hi Pinniped,
just to say that there's no real reason to take this out of the AWW.
The Post make their own copy, and link to that in their archives - so this 'original' can quite reasonably, and in my view valuably, kept on display in this forum.
There have been rumblings of an 'underguide' selection, and stirrings of some kind of 'section process' involving discussion in this very forum before (now this is just a distant murmur) some kind of appearance on the front page as a kinda 'non-EG entry of the day'.
but yours to do with as you will, me old fellah! Naturlig.
I happen to know that you have one or two entries that would not get a look in in PR, but to my mind merit a wider h2 audience.
Interested?
I'm not selling, honest, just informing and inviting.

Hiya Spiff
You bet I'm interested.
Only one or two?

(already lurking round some of the Underguide convos. Any pointers appreciated, though)

Beat me to it Spiff! I was coming back to ask Pinniped thought something more was needed for entries like these than the Post or CAC could provide.
I'm glad this one got more of an airing than the AWW.

Hi Guys,
Don't get me started...
...well, OK, since you asked...
I do think that something more than the Post and CAC is needed. The Post is good, but a little samey and (dare I say it?) safe. CAC is more provocative, but it's a pretty small window, and it sometimes misses (for me at least) by being a little too set in editorial style.
The 42WeeksofGlory of the former AGG/GAG/CAC were more varied, but even that formula was limited.
The central problem is the Edited Guide. The general material accepted isn't good enough, and moreover the rules are idiotic. They stifle creativity, and set a lowest-common-denominator framework that squeezes out originality.
The Underguide threads mostly kowtow to it. In fact the Edited Guide is cr*p, and a dreadful testament to the memory of DNA. It's a wholly unforgiveable concept for the central gallery of h2g2.
There, I said it. Now what?

"Now what?" Come over to the Underguide threads and help redress the balance? We could do with more challenging on how it's going. It would help make sure we get it right. There's still plenty of room for debate.
