Well, a little late news before I drop this issue
it was bred and introduced by the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station in 1942. It is a Jonathan X Wagener cross. Grandpa got an interesting mail from a customer in Yellville, Arkansas who told us his uncle Benton Brown, who must have been a scientist at the Idaho Experiment Station was the developer of the Idared apple, and named it for Donnie's great-great-grandmother, Ida Post Cooper. She must have been a wonderful lady to have been immortalized in this fashion!

Wow, you sure have your apple info down. I think you need to write a Guide Entry on it. Until D did a recent writing assignment on US history- I had no idea that apples were late in becoming one of America's favourite fruit as bananas were all the rage at one time and Prohibition had sort of put a cramp in the hard cider industry.

I love the new apple season
Russets are my favourite - really sweet, but only last a couple of days before they go rotten.
Did we ever find out why Ida Red dropped its space?
