It would seem that public protest *can* achieve results. In mid-December 2010, the Netherlands government announced that the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Centre would not after all close, but would receive *some* public funding, albeit less than 50% of its previous budget. Quite how this new financial environment for the NBMC will pan out remains to be seen, but at least it's still in the ring and fighting.

No good news from Detroit however. A proposal by Senator Carl Levin and Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, and accepted by the musicians, was rejected before Christmas by the orchestra's management. The strike continues.
