Demon Drawer

Does look a Tad familiar and suspicious especially with all the quoates being current footballers. Only the Bill Shanks quote in the intro is a true classic. And there is no mention of Cloughie is this an origianl piece of writing.

Zarquon's Singing Fish!

I notice a couple of concerns about this piece, in this thread and under the entry itself, about it possibly not being original.

I would also liked to have heard more from the greats of the past. I agree that the Shanks one is truly classic.

As it is now, it would be better suited for 'So Long And Thanks For Laughing' at A344251. If you're heading for the edited guide then it could help to collect some more quotes (as others have said), classify them and perhaps put some more flesh around them.

Here's some from Germany (if the Moderators permit)

'Nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel' -- 'After the game is before the game', Sepp Herberger (former trainer of Germany's national team). Translates as: 'Won't you please rest on your laurels' or 'Hey, we've got another chance next week' depending on *when* it is said.

'Der Ball ist rund' -- deep and pure wisdom from Sepp Herberger: 'The ball is round'. Well, thanks for that, I wouldn't have gathered that. But the full quote is
'Der Ball ist rund, damit das Spiel die Richtung ändern kann' = 'The ball is round, so the game may take up a different direction' -- good as word of motivation at half time if your team is on the losing road.

"Das habe ich ihm dann auch verbal gesagt" - Mario Basler. 'I then told him verbally' -- don't know how to tell something inverbally.

"Zwei Chancen, ein Tor - das nenne ich hundertprozentige Chancenauswertung" - Fritz Walter jun. '[We had] two chances, [and scored] one goal - that's what I call taking 100& of your chances.' Oh, dreadful maths!

"Zuerst hatten wir kein Glück, und dann kam auch noch Pech dazu." - Jürgen Wegmann. 'At first, we didn't have luck, and then we had misery too'

"Der Jürgen Klinsmann und ich, wir sind ein gutes Trio .... Ich meinte: ein Quartett." - Fritz Walter jun. 'J.K. and me, thats a good trio .... I mean, a quartet' More dreadful maths.

"Ich bin immer noch am überlegen, welche Sportart meine Mannschaft an diesem Abend ausgeübt hat. Fußball war's mit Sicherheit nicht." - Franz Beckenbauer. 'I'm still contemplating about which type of sport my team was performing on that evening. One thing is sure: it wasn't football'

"Wenn man ein 0:2 kassiert, dann ist ein 1:1 nicht mehr möglich." - Aleksander Ristic. 'Once the score is 0:2, a 1:1 draw is no more possible'. Correct, oh so correct!

"Jürgen Klinsmann ist inzwischen 694 Minuten ohne Tor. Das hat vor ihm, glaube ich, nur Sepp Maier geschafft." - Harald Schmidt. 'J.K. has been playing 694 minutes without a goal now. I think Sepp Maier was the only one who accomplished this before'. You should know that Sepp Maier was Germany's most famous goalkeeper and Klinsman is a striker.

*warning to us citizens: this is about real football! smiley - winkeye*

"Football is a game where you run and run for 90 minutes and Germany always wins in the end" Gary Lineker - I think....

Ouch! Posting that right after Sir Bossel (who happens to be German) wasn't fun...... smiley - winkeye So let's help with this one:

"Hutlihut!" Shouted with much gesto by Flemming Toft, Danish TV-commentator upon Denmark scoring the second goal in the 2-1 European Cup 1992 victory against - well, you guessed it - Germany

Other than that, I think - as others before me - that internationalisation and quotes from a longer timespan might be a very good idea. But I like the idea of having an entry - after all, football is not a question of life and death. It is much more important than that (but who said that???)

Oh that Lineker quote must be from *loooong* ago! Nobody tries to bet a single € on the chances of current national team to get into the final game (least: win it). Some mean voices claim that some team members love 'Status Quo' concerts... and have been to *all* of them smiley - winkeye
