So, you're into the Furries. Therefore it follows that you must have excellent taste in music. So what other stuff does everyone (both of you!) listen to?

Me? I like beta band, mogwai, primal scream, gorkys amongst others.

What sort of person does it take to like the furries? You have to be a bit messed up in the first place in my opinion...

Ste, I have just noticed your front-page
article about species distinctions. The
picture that accompanied it led me to think
it would be about geishas, so naturally
I was intrigued.....

Anyway, does there really have to be a connection
between loving furry animals and being a
music lover of one sort or another?
This planet's first musicians were frogs (or their
precursors. It's most enthusiastic natural
musicians nowadays are birds. Neither amphibians
nor birds are furry, as that term is usually
understood.

This leaves human compositions that attempt to
mimic animal sounds. Maybe that's the direction
you want to go? Well, there's Saint-Saens'
"Cartnival of the Animals." In the Renaissance,
there was Jannequin's "Le Chanson des Oiseaux."
The French certainly seem to have gotten a
reputation for that sort of music, don't they?
("Program Music," it was called, as opposed to
"Absolute music," which doesn't purport to be
about anything).

I like all the other "nu-psychadelic" stuff like Flaming Lips, Beta Band and Mercury Rev. I also quite like Radiohead, The Hives, The Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Early Bowie, The Smiths, The Stranglers, Ian Brown, Tricky. You name it

I'm going to see the FLips in LA this weekend! . Blimey mate, we seem to have nearly the same music tastes (apart from the Strokes )!

I saw BRMC with Spiritualized in a small venue in San Diego not too long ago, I was quite impressed, I'd need to hear more to be convinced though...

Most of the composers I really like
have been dead at least a hundred years.
I write some stuff of my own, though,
and I'm not dead yet, so maybe there's
still hope.....

Sorry, I haven't heard of *any* of the
groups that have just been mentioned.
There are a few singers I like, such as
Vanessa Williams and Audra MacDonald.
Jason Alexander isn't too bad. We've
lost Sinatra and Torme and Ella Fitzgerald
recently, which wasn't a good thing.
Julie Andrews is still very much alive,
but her vocal cords were butchered so badly
that she can't sing any more.

Leslie Uggams still sounds good. John Raitt
has lost his voice. Pavarotti is still good,
but who knows for long? I don't know if
Judy Garland's daughters are still singing
professionally, though I never liked Liza
Minnelli's technique.

Madonna has a nice voice, actually, and she
sang well in the film version of "Evita."
It was her acting that wasn't up to snuff.
Meryl Streep would have done a better job
overall, but she opted out because of fatigue.
Linda Ronstadt used to have a beautiful
voice, as did Joan Baez. I don't know if
either one is still singing professionally....

I got given the new Flaming Lips album - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots - for my birthday and it's absolutely excellent. Very SFA-esque too. Highly recommended. Go buy.

I got that last month after seeing them in LA (my second gig, the first being glasto 2000). Got covered in confetti (that gets thrown about) and Mimi managed to attack Tim Roth (the actor) with a handful of the stuff. An all round great laugh. The FLips are the best live band around I think, even better than the furries (only live that is).

I like the album a LOT. It's really relaxed. It seems to have catchy pop songs sandwiched in between chilled instrumental, er, stuff.



Not as good as the Soft Bulletin though, but that would be a bit too much to ask.

FL glasto 2000! That was such a good show, boxing nun puppets, fake blood and all.

I reckon Yoshimi is as good as the Soft Bulletin - it just gets better and better the more you listen...

Since I saw them at glasto they've added four huge disco balls, about 20 people dressed up in animal costumes throwing things, dancing, playing with high-powered torches and generally having a laugh. Oh, and about three songs from Yoshimi.

I have Yoshimi playing on my computer at work right now. I like it a lot, it's helping me concentrate on stuff because it's so chilled. Shame h2g2 does about the opposite.

I need to get "Yoshimi". Any news on a new Super Furries album, btw?

I think they're recording one now to be released in the first half of 2003. The US tour that they're just about to embark on is a bit of a break from their recording sessions I think.

*LA and San Diego gigs* on two consecutive nights* Eeeee!



On a completely different topic:
SFA have said that they've recorded stuff under a different name. Does anyone have a clue what it could be? I don't think it's Acid Casuals, Ffa Coffi Pawb or another SFA ancestor/relative. Hmmm...

I keep hearing a song on the radio that sounds very SFA-ish but isn't the Furries. I'm going to try and find out what it is.
