Whisky

Does Sargents Ice-Cream still exist?

Probably the best ice-cream I've ever tasted!

Hi Whisky, I am pleased to see that you still do!smiley - biggrin

I am sorry to inform you that Tony Sargent died in 2010 and I will have to do some research to find out if it is still made.
http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/Popular-ice-cream-maker-Tony-Sargent-laid-rest/story-11182356-detail/story.html

It's a serious omission though, how could I have missed ice cream?smiley - facepalm I can think of Appleby's straight off, and I know that's still going, there's a van parked at the Boating Lake car park that I saw just last week.

>>Lincolnshire in England is famous the world over for its tasty sausages, but read on and you will learn lots more about special Lincolnshire foods.<<

Geez, I'm so ignorant. I've never heard of Lincolnshire sausages. smiley - smiley

Are you sure they are Freisian cows, not Friesian cows?

>>Lincoln Blue is made in Market Rasen. It is a medium strength, mature blue cheese suitable for vegetarians. <<- What does make this cheese suitable for vegetarians (and not other cheeses)?

>>Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese is an award winner the world over:<<

You then go on and name various British Cheeses Awards. Do cheeses from other countries compete in these awards? According to their homepage it is:

The British Cheese Awards is a nationwide campaign to raise the profile of British cheese that was established in 1994.

That's hardly "the world over"?

(all those cheeses make my mouth water, btw, and I'm very sorry we cannot buy them here)

I've heard of Ostrich farms and such, but I wouldn't expect it to be a typical Lincolnshire food, tbh. What makes it typical for Lincolnshire in comparison to, say, the Pathfinder Ostrich Farm in Chesham, Buckinghamshire?

I Like the entry, it is interesting and well written, as always, and I don't mean to lessen the claims for fame, but I think they need explaining a bit. smiley - smiley

Well, I didn't mean every person in the world had heard of themsmiley - laughbut I do know of local people who are asked to bring Lincolnshire sausages with them when they go abroad. Perhaps it's for ex-pats, I wouldn't know. I've reworded it.

>>Are you sure they are Freisian cows, not Friesian cows?<<
smiley - birofixed, thank you!

What does make this cheese suitable for vegetarians (and not other cheeses)? I don't know, I am sure all cheeses are suitable for vegetarians, but I wouldn't like to state that in case they aren't. That particular cheese stated that it was on their website, which is why I included it.

>>Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese is an award winner the world over:<<
It says in the entry: <> (in the bullet points).

<> Nothing smiley - smiley but then if I limited myself to food not found elsewhere, it would be an extremely short article.

Thanks for reading and the review smiley - smiley

I would change Her Majesty the Queen to Queen Elizabeth II in order to again not get her confused with other Queens and to future proof the Entry.

>>Best British Cheese at the World Cheese awards in 2000><< Uups, sorry, what with all the Brit awards you list I didn't notice this one. smiley - blush

I would think that any cheese is suitable for vegetarians (who don't mind dairy produce), but none (bar soya cheeses)are suitable for vegans. I know some producers point such things out for marketing reasons, but it's really nothing other cheeses couldn't claim, too. I'd take it out, but it's up to you, naturally. smiley - smiley

Some cheese is made with animal rennet which is a portion of a calves stomach, it's only 'vegetarian cheese' which is made with genetically engineered rennet.

Nowadays a lot of cheeses are vegetarian, but 20 years ago it was quiet rare.

Yes, I know. I think nowadays most cheeses are made the way you describe, but if it's all traditional cheese in Lincolnshire, maybe they do it the olden way.

I didn't know that, thanks Z, in that case I'll leave in the info.
Knowing vegetarians I am sure that they make their own enquiries as to what is contained in what they are purchasing.

No problem Belsmiley - biggrinI could have clumped all the awards together but I think they are more aesthetically pleasing listed as bullet points in date order.

Thanks all, for your input, I'm most gratefulsmiley - ok

Hi GB.

smiley - biro

"The apple is a versatile fruit which provides a healthy snack and one of your '5 a day' (five portions of fruit and vegetables to maintain a healthy diet)."

It may be worth re-wording this slightly as the 5-a-day is a British thing. In other countries it is 7 or even 10 a day.

smiley - biro

"The manor was the childhood home of Sir Isaac Newton, and that tree bore the apple which inspired him to consider the concept of gravity."

I would say "supposedly inspired him" - I seem to remember the apple thing may be a bit of a myth?

smiley - biro

"The Lincolnshire cider-maker's claim to fame is that Skidbrooke Cyder is exported to Somerset."

I think you should mention that Somerset is the traditional home of cider as it won't be clear to foreign types! smiley - winkeye

smiley - biro

It might just be me, but when you talk about Samphire being a Lincolnshire delicacy it makes it sound a little like that's the only place it grows.

When I opened the entry I expected it to be about Lincolnshire specialities, but many of the things you mention are just specific brands available in Lincolnshire. There's nothing wrong with that but I think it would be more logical to move the specialities (sausages, samphire, apples etc to the top and then move onto the rest. Just a thought! smiley - 2cents

It's probably just me, but I think samphire deserves an Entry of its own.

Anyway, just bouncing this up to the heady heights of the PR queue to see if it gets any more comment smiley - smiley
