I was wondering if I could join the ranks of your kind, holding the chair of "Token ex-Catholic." I was a devoted believer for some time (even to the point of arguing right here in the Entry about the discrepancies and shortcomings of the Bible). But now my faith has eroded, due to a few factors including (most importantly) the overwhelming wall of logic that does not support theistic beliefs, my own bad experiences with Xtians, the death of my baby cousin (which was hard enough in itself; even worse when Xtains told me it was because of the sins of the baby's parents).

Please accept my willing conversion smiley - winkeye.

Almost certainly, I would think. We're not very exclusive! smiley - biggrin

Nice one! smiley - ok There are many ex-Catholics around here; I'm one of them. smiley - blue But I recovered! smiley - cheerup I'm a pantheist these days....

<<...now my faith has eroded, due to a few factors including ... the death of my baby cousin...>>

Phew. smiley - sadface Be careful: religion is too important, *and* too trivial, to pick up or drop merely because of things that happen in the RW. However you rationalise these things for yourself, your God(s) *will* allow all kinds of things to happen, even if you'd prefer otherwise. That's just what Gods are like. smiley - winkeye Get your own back: fashion God in your own image! smiley - winkeye

I suspect few here will wish to 'accept' your conversion; that's for you to do. However, I'm pretty sure that everyone will be pleased to meet you, and welcome you to the seedy and disreputable abode that is the FFFF. smiley - oksmiley - biggrin Welcome, Cheese! smiley - cheers

Ugh. They really said that? If I ever meet any of them, I'm going to put them in hospital. I mean it.

Doesn't that just embody how religion can go so very, very wrong?

Welcome, anyway. Join the ongoing argument.

The Cheese

It was a combination of horrendous events combined with the lack of explanation I found through religion. And then a process I went through last year where on a daily basis my faith in a God eroded more and more until I started believing that no one was going to answer my prayers (I'd always doubted omniprescence) and that when I was dead, no one would pick up my soul and transport me into some other life.

It's been a while since I posted here. But don't worry, my non-faith hasn't lapsed smiley - winkeye

Thought this might be of interest: http://godlessamericans.org/

However,
"The Godless Americans March on Washington scheduled for November 2 is being organized by New Jersey-based American Atheists as a protest "against a long list of actions and attitudes considered prejudicial to nonbelievers," Steinfels reports. Among the many groups and individuals that have accepted the organizers' invitation to endorse the event are two satanic organizations: the Order of Perdition and the United Satanic Convenire. Although the American Atheists have no problem with the Satanists, the Council for Secular Humanism has objected to the inclusion of the friends of Lucifer -- on the grounds that they are too religious."

DoctorBen, as you should be well-aware, non-faith is not a requirement for being here! All you need is an open mind and the ability to debate in an interesting way about controversial things. And to say things you would have gotten yourself burned at the stake for a few thousand years back.

And to you, The Cheese, I extend hearty welcomes. I hope that we are of some help to you in whatever you might need help in at the moment and in the future.

Wait... The Cheese... is there any chance that that's a reference to a Cormier novel? If it is what I think it is, no wonder you lost your faith.

Me, I'm faithless, but certainly not atheist. More Pantheist.

Oh my! Someone finally actually figured out where I got my name! smiley - smiley

Anyway, I happen to much like the Cormier novel _I Am the Cheese_. And so it became my name smiley - winkeye. And it didn't make me lose faith, although I don'tlike hisother books nearly as much (except for the infamous _The Chocolate War_)...

Right, enough formality; smiley - stiffdrinks all around.

Welcome aboard Cheese, and I might just add, on a personal note, as an ex-Catholic myself... smiley - ok

Can he still be token when he's not alone? Or do we not care about such pedantry?

If a Catholic who has lost their faith is called lapsed, does that mean if someone then recovers it they have had a relapse of religion?

Not unless it matters to someone. smiley - biggrin For example:

<>

A *re*lapse is a subsequent lapse, n'est ce pas? So the poor fool concerned would have to lapse from his chosen religion, then rediscover his faith, and then turn his back on it again. Indecisive, or what? smiley - winkeye
