Mathematics

Mathematics, at a reasonably high level, is the study of things with little or no relation to the real world, and the attempts to pass this off as somehow informing us about the Universe. The less relevance a study has to the real world, the higher form of maths it is considered to be, and the more respected are its practitioners. The very highest branches of mathematics are those that have no point of connection with reality, and indeed may require an entirely different Universe in order to make any sense at all.
There are such things as applied mathematicians, but they are generally regarded as having either sold out, or missed the point somehow.
