just trying to type my notes out before I'm unable to read them...

Einstein
cosmological constant
dismissed by himself

the assembled(?) amount of gravity in the universe ought to slow down the effects of the 'Big Bang' and eventually make universe collapse into itself, crunch together, Big Bang backwards

supernova type 1A
ordinary star blows up, then shrinks into white dwarf about the size of earth
red giant other star, together death dance, gas transmitted to dwarf star, erupting

supernova - pretty fast development compared to other things happening in the universe - usually 1 week-1 month

universe first mostly hydrogen and helium
supernovas created heavier types of elements
supernova type 1A specific mix of elements

Red shift shows if the supernova is a type 1A or not

1990 - the Hubble telescope was placed in space

strength(?) of light compared to 'red shift' shows that the speed of the expansion is increasing

2 separate groups of supernova hunters made same discovery individually, believed it to be a mistake, double checked

the expansion of universe is accelerating

reason: something is counteracting the effects of gravity and pushes the galaxes apart

vacuum energy?
dark energy?
arises from nothing?

quote: 'It causes space to accelerate from itself'

30 galaxies including ours are held together by gravity, forming the local galaxy group, included in the local 'super group'

dark energy/dark materia neither transmits nor reflects light

2/3 of universe consisting of dark energy and/or vacuum energy

most critical sceptics are the supernova hunters themselves

unknown expanding force

Mount Hopkins telescope
