As an aside, it was mentioned (possibly on Noesis) that the new site wouldn't have links with DNA/h2g2/etc. anymore. I see the DNA part of the page address is still in the link. Is this a temporary measure, policy rethink, or was the original info wrong? Not that it matters, just wondered that's all.

dna/h2g2/skin is the way that the system works.
we're intending to do a rebuild in the future, but we need to get the system working first.
we could have taken the site offline a lot longer, did the full rebuild and brought it back, but who'd want that?!

Thought it might be something like that. It's just everyone seemed to be certain that we would be launching with shorter page URLs so I wondered why they were still showing DNA.

to be honest, i never thought we'd have shorter page urls. Not sure where that came from. Ah well. We will in the future though.

They are shorter - we now just have h2g2.com instead of bbc.co.uk/h2g2

But if this gets working perfectly..why a full re-build?
It's pragmatic isn't it?
What's the thinking behind a full rebuild?
(That might be a silly question..but I've never been afraid to ask them).

There's more to DNA than meets the eye. It's still used by the BBC - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/hub/F94020?thread=8286256

You can take the h2g2 out of BBC, but you can't take the DNA ...
Out of the BB...
You can take the DNA out of BBC but the BBC still has...
H2G2...
This sounded better in my head.

DNA is a massively complicated beast that stretches into areas we don't need. it's been designed and built in a way that isn't really suitable for the directions we want to take it.
because of its intricatecies to change it how we plan wouldn't really be effective. there's things like editor tools within h2g2 itself, but moderation tools bolted on outside. we're looking at providing a singular platform written in one programming language that can provide the Guide across multiple technologies. i could go on for ages, but the kettle's boiled.

I think some of my older journal entries go into it a bit more. Really should write it up a bit if they don't.
And please, it's Pastey I really ought to get that suffix bug fixed or everyone will think I go around calling myself a deity. My ego's not *that* big yet
