Some years back we had a house with a very long, narrow back garden. About 120 yards down to a brook. We also had a cat. We'd quite often stroll down to the end of the garden and back, look at the trees and the brook and the frogs (this was before the internet) and the cat would very often come for the walk with us. But in next door's garden. If we stopped, she'd stop. If we doubled back, she'd double back. She'd always be level with us. In next door's garden. If we looked at her, she'd find something very interesting just over there to go and look at.
Cats are not to be trusted.

Cats can get to you if you let them. I know a married couple that has gradually accumulated more and more cats. They topped out at twelve, but are down to ten, as two have died recently.
As for trust: when you're a carnivorous hunter, you need to be pretty stealthy in order to survive. Cats have all sorts of tricks. It's inbred.

Aren't wolves capable of stealth?

For humans we are a bit, and a bit not pack. Depends on circumstance.

Humans seem pretty complicated to me.

I can see why you'd say that but I know many to whom simply none of it applies.

Are you talking about vegetarians (who don't hunt, not being carniviores), Merely a Number?

yes, but cats are ambush predetors, they need to get close before they strike
pack hunters rely on numbers and stamina to run their prey down
its a bit s+s

I'm including some people of whose diet I know nothing so I suppose I must say I'm not talking about vegetarians.
I know only few hunters and I must say I think some of them might tend to pack depending on circumstances.

All I was saying was that people's temperaments might be shaped by their cirucmstances, which would include what they can find to eat. Before mechanical harvesters and tractors came along, it took teamwork to do the planting and harvesting -- much work at pivotal times, so some form of social organization is necessary.

It could be a fine job for a couple.

That some form of social organization is necessary is obviously undeniably true.
All I was trying to point out is that we shouldn't generalise that people pack or not depending (only) on circumstances. It depends heavily also on the individuals concerned.
And I don't think an attachment such as exists between a couple or even a family necessarily constitutes pack behaviour, either.
Key: Complain about this post
