Star Wars

Star Wars is one of the biggest entertainment and marketing phenomena of the twentieth century (certainly for Twentieth Century Fox anyway). It started off as a movie, then another movie, then another movie. Along with the movies came the toys, posters, t-shirts, crisps and other such paraphenalia that had never been seen before with any film. To be fair, however, this attention is not totally misplaced. Star Wars is a damned good film. It is the first film of it's genre to feature characters who don't speak as though they have just walked off stage at the Royal Shakespeare Company, spaceships that are in real need of some TLC and environments that look lived in. What is interesting is that the first film to be released was actually Episode 4 in the series. It was followed by episodes 5 and 6. Episode 1, as I write, is about to be released. Episode 1 is called "The Phantom Menace" and it is the most eagerly awaited film ever. Episodes 4, 5 and 6 are known as "A New Hope", "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" respectively. There will not be a plot summary here, as this would spoil the films. However, suffice to say, the films are full of laser gun fights, attacks on giant space stations, droids, aliens, an evil empire, a mystical force and much else besides. It is this that captured the imaginations of most males (and some females) under the age of 30. In some circles, the cult status of the film has ensured that the saga is, for all intents and purposes, cool. It is interesting to consider that if someone was to admit to certain people a liking for other films from the genre, they would be ridiculed. The Star Wars
Saga managed to transcend the stigma of the science fiction film. The saga is the brainchild of George Lucas. This is particularly interesting, since the same man was responsible for Howard the Duck, considered by some to be one of the worst films ever made. However, when Lucas applied himself properly, he was able to come up with a fantastic story of good versus evil, of destiny against self determination, of trust against betrayal. In summary, the Star Wars saga has touched the lives of so many, whether directly or indirectly.
It broke boundaries, created more, then broke them too. It's success is mirrored by it's depth, fantasy and entertainment. Although I couldn't personally recommend all the hype, the films are definitely worth watching. May the Force be with you.
