I'm hoping that somebody will get around to trying this. I'd like some sort of validation that its as close as I think it is to the real thing.

It has come to my attention that a smoother, less bitter, flavour might result from a process called cold brewing. Similar to cold brewed tea, the recipe calls for .5 Kg to be mixed with 3 L of water. Put it in the refrigerator for 12 hours, and filter it to produce a cold brewed coffee 'syrup' for making cold coffee drinks.

The problem I see is that, even though it is strong and 'brewed', to get the sugar to dissolve would still require heating. I'll get around to trying that soon, and see if it makes a smoother, more Kahlua like drink.

If it works, I'll offer it as a less speedy, emergency-like, alternative.

Sorry to say, cold-brewed coffee did not make a difference.

If Lanz is okay with it, I would like to declare this ready to be picked up.smiley - ok

Gnomon - time to move on

Sugar is never measured by volume in the UK and Ireland, always by weight. Only liquids are measured by volume.

You're right, of course, but I was truly hoping to keep it simpler than having to weigh stuff. I don't find any advantage in following conventions that are inconvenient and do not add value to the process.

That said, weight is more accurate given the differences in the 'Cup' around the world. 215g it is!

Gnomon - time to move on

Most people in the UK would have a measuring cup, I think.

Done and done!

I used the 215 grams that the teacup I used held. Wrongheaded, so I'm glad to be corrected, but it occurs to me that sugar should be a liquid measure and not a dry measure.

Sugar, after all, is hydroscopic. Heated, it becomes liquid. That's how I used to make caramel for the recipe when I thought it was needed.

Nosebagbadger {Ace}

Dont most things become liquid when heated?

Ignore me, apologies, having done a chemistry AS exam today that required mind-boggling precision (but no intelligence) i am feeling exacting.

In any case, excellent entry

you're right of course nosebagbear - and great to see you again btw. However, not many things can be heated until they reach their respective melting points in domestic kitchens smiley - laugh although some may try!

Actually, I meant hyGroscopic, meaning "changed or altered by the absorption of moisture". This also means that I used it in the wrong context! smiley - doh

And hyDroscopes are used for peering about underwater.smiley - ill

Unfortunately I don't like coffee (heathen, I know) so I won't be trying it. Still, it reads well for me. I'm glad the decision was made for the dry weight of sugar, not the liquid one as that makes much more sense to me.

Just a couple of comments:

smiley - biroWhere you have written comments in [] they should be in footnotes, so they don't clog up the main text.

smiley - biroWill the different ingredients mix themselves, or should you shake the bottle (after you've sealed it, of course)? Also, do they settle if you leave them in a cupboard for a week or so?

smiley - biroThe title is slightly misleading, as I thought I was about to read about coffee flavoured liqueur in general, rather than a recipe for a coffee liqueur substitute. Perhaps a better title would be 'A Cheaper Coffee Flavoured Liqueur' or 'Alternatives to Expensive Coffee Flavoured Liqueurs'. Titles aren't my strong point though, so you may come up with something a bit snappier.

Other than that, it looks good. smiley - ok I'm sure it'll be picked before long.

Oh - and if you say cold-brewed makes little difference, you might want to change your footnote, as it currently recommends doing it that way. smiley - ok Possibly say that it's an alternative method instead.
