Many students in Finland think that Swedish shouldn't be mandatory...

Yeah, I was one of them in school.. now I feel quite bad about it, though. Every once in a while I'd actually need Swedish but I can't speak it properly.

That really doesn't make sense. The fact that you had to study Swedish and can't speak it properly doesn't defend it being mandatory, but the opposite. If it was optional, people could choose to study it and maybe even learn better because it would seem to have more purpose. I can't even understand much Swedish anymore, so the time spent studying it was quite a waste of time.

As a Dane, I find it far easier to understand Bokmål than Nynorsk, but then, that is as a Dane.
I travel to Norway every year and has done so as long as I remember - my boyfriend through many years has relatives there; primarily in the Arendal-Grimstad area, where we go on vacations each year. This year, we also drove through the lower mountains to Bergen. I just love that country, your nature is so . . . majestic!
You may not find that trip such a big achievement, but as a Dane, I knew nothing of steep-road-driving and I'm sure I've all but demolished my breaks.
But what I was trying to say, is that I can meet people whom I have a very hard time understanding. Nynorsk, probably.
