How about LIVR? As in Learned, Impartial and Very Relaxed?

It needs to be something short, catchy, and clear, similar to ACE's Guru's Guardian Angels (GA's). If we have an acronym it should be something that means something so people will instantly have an idea what it's about. I'll give it a think.

Life, the Universe, and Everything; chapter 14:

""The people of Krikkit," said His High Judgmental Supremacy, Judiciary Pag, LIVR (the Learned, Impartial and Very Relaxed) Chairman of the Board of Judges at the Krikkit War Crimes Trial, "are, well, you know, they're just a bunch of real sweet guys, you know, who just happen to want to kill everybody. Hell, I feel the same way some mornings. S**t."

Fair description of a full fledged flame war, not? smiley - winkeye

Have a logo with the scales and explain at the Arbitrator's page. Ok?

I really really really don't like LIVR.

1) My immediate image was of a plate of smooth wet dark red offal on a plate. (The plate was white china, btw). Yukkk.

2) In-jokes that have to be explained tend to exclude people

3) Any joke that has to be explained is not funny

4) Some of us are not particularly DNA fans, and an in-joke based on one of the weaker books is just plain irritating.

5) Names need to be either reasonably self-explanitory (scout, guru) or sound funky (ace)

6) Arbiter, or Community Arbiter says very clearly what we hope to do.

*as always - open to persuasion!*

Hmm, Arbiters, Judges, Fireman/woman, Third Party?

I like h2g2.cop, but that's another in-joke, so never mind smiley - smiley

Tribunes?

As I recall, they were elected by the people to protect them from the nasty Roman Emperors.

My turn!

Just as I was trying to come up with clever things about 'LIVR spots' and 'LIVR function' and 'LIVR_N_ONIONS', I realized that the reference was even more obscure than 'Telephone Sanitizers'. Maybe not so good.

After all those excellent suggestions, I still like 'Telephone Sanitizers' best. I've been calling the Arbiter's Scheme the Telephone Sanitizer's manual, and the group the Telephone Sanitizer's Union - it all fits together nicely. Besides, not only is 'Telephone Sanitizer' a nice homage to Douglas Adams, but it has that implication of saving a planet to go along with it! (not to imply that h2g2 will fail *without* this scheme, but who wants a sticky telephone?)

(I like Telephone Sanitizers best, too; but bias could be proven...)

How come no one's suggested "Ravenous Bugblatter Beasts" because we're so fierce and toothy?

The real reason for this post: I found this really cool word while having a dictionary for breakfast -- Intercessor. Ta-da!

Sounds like something you would zap a Vogon with, getting off a shot *before* the poetry, one hopes.

Or this: "Stand aside, everyone! I am Captain Intercessor and I'm here to save you."

Not bad for 2:15 in the morning, eh?

Oh, by the way, the proposal's been updated a bit. Check it out when you have time. Ta.

So there yourself. Nyah.

Anyone have any thoughts as to where the Arbiter disclaimers/warnings tags ought to go?

"For Emergency Use Only!"
"Use Only As Directed!"
"Do Not Try This at Home!"
"May Cause Drowsiness."
"Do Not Discontinue Taking This Medication Until Symptoms Have Disappeared."

(That's gonna be a biiiiiiig badge...)

As for the anti-arbiters:

The 'Pontifical Order of Obsequious Pundits'... (P.O.O.P.)

(Sorry - just an acronym with nowhere to go. Thank you for letting me get it out of my system.)
