It is more likely that, since both "applause" and "clapping hands" were on the previous long version of the smiley suggestions list but in different places, no-one thought about it too hard. Applause isn't a smiley I use or a word I would have trouble spelling but I can see that clap would be easier for many people.

Well even if you usually don't mispell applause, there's twice as much space for a typo...
btw is anyone else getting lots of XML parser errors?
