Campain for a Northam Station
Bluebottle Started conversation Jul 28, 2001
Northam, in Southampton, is where until the electrification of the line, a convenient station was. Northam is essentially 5 minutes from the city centre, and is in many ways more convenient to get to than Southampton Central.
Nowadays the line there still exists, as an unused and unelectrified siding. However, the new Southampton football stadium has been built beside it, and there is a campaign to get it re-opened. Afterall, all it would take would be to electrify a very small amount of line, build a small platform, and a road. You could possibly build a footbridge, but that isn't vital. With Southampton Airport Parkway having a new huge carpark built for the Park and Ride scheme to the city centre's shops, fans would be able to come off the M27, park, and travel to the stadium easily without overloading the city centre's roads.
Fans could also travel there by train from Bournemouth, Winchester, London, Portsmouth etc. It would save major congestion in the city centre and approaching, yet SWT refuse to.
