Darn it Doctor, that was gonna be my opening. smiley - biggrin

Not knowing anything about Tulsa I can't really comment much, but I feel it needs to be fleshed out a little. A few points you could expand on are:
When was this race riot? How was the general black/white relationship in Tulsa/Oklahoma at that time?
Why the flood control? Is there a big river? Small river? Flat country?
What kind of climate does Tulsa have?
Some people might not know where Oklahoma is, so you should describe Tulsa's location in relation to something other than the state. (I vaguely recall Oklahoma being somewhat in the middle of the US, gotta check a map. Ok, in the middle, but way down south on top of Texas, got it... doesn't show the name of the river though.)

Where do the main highways lead? Who are the local Native American tribes?

Just of the few of the questions I'd like to see answered in your entry. smiley - smiley Keep at it. smiley - ok

Two other points of interest about Tulsa:

It is the location of Oral Roberts University, which appears to be a fundamentalist Christian college (it seems to be rather notorious in some quarters, but I don't know enough about American TV preachers to know why)

It is the home of the science fiction writer Mercedes Lackey, some of whose modern fantasy works have been set in that area.

Hi there, not a bad start for an entry, but it did leave me with a few too many questions... (and a grin on my face after the "awe inspiring damn" smiley - winkeye)

I'd like to see a little more on the history of the town, the race riots piqued my interest... they might be worth an entry of their own - or if not, a little expansion.

The sports and rec. paragraph left me a little confused (as a non-american). For instance, just what do the Texas Rangers play and why do they need an expansion team... come to that, what is an expansion team?

That's about it for now, as always, feel free to ignore anything I say in here...

I think the entry covers the basics, basically. It doesn't have to be expanded much IMO. Could be good to go as it stands. Someone could at a later point decide to write the 'ultimative entry' on Tulsa, OK, USA.

(For that reason a better-working version of the update HQ should be implemented in the near future... But that's stuff for the 'feature-suggest' thread.)

When was this race riot?
I am not exactly sure, but a little research would do the trick, i do know that all the public records of the day it happened were stolen/destroyed/vanished, which was interesting to think about.

How was the general black/white relationship in Tulsa/Oklahoma at that time?
not a clue, currently they are united in a vague dislike of Hispanics, who seem intent on stealing all the unskilled labor, which the teenagers and 'white trash' usually fill

Why the flood control?
Because of our spontaneous weather and the um, fast hard and relativly small areas being attacked by said weather.

Is there a big river? Small river? Flat country?
Hilly country, but small hills. the Arkansas River runs through Southern Tulsa, and nearby is the Port of Catoosa, which is the furthest inland barges can come up the Arkansas.

What kind of climate does Tulsa have?
I don't know if you would call it 'climate.' Oklahoma is subject to Tornadoes, but only during Spring and Fall, sometimes Winter. Tulsa is protected for the most part by Turkey Mountain's weather shadow, which causes tornadoes to 'jump' the city, often landing on the poorer suburbs. mild winters with maybe one snow that lasts more than a day. and a summer of no more then 110 degrees F and usually around the mid 90's. Dry during summer, wet during winter.

Some people might not know where Oklahoma is, so you should describe Tulsa's location in relation to something other than the state.
OK, Tulsa is about 2 hours drive South of Kansas Border, and 3 West of the Missouri border. Oklahoma is South of Kansas, North of Texas, and West of Arkansas. it shares a small amount of border with New Mexico(W), Missouri(NE) and Colorado(NW).

Where do the main highways lead?
Highway 169 goes Nourth/South and leads all the way to Kansas/Texas
Highway 75 does pretty much the same.
Highway 20 goes East/West and never really hits Tulsa, but runs through the northern suburbs, Collinsville, Owasso, and Claremore. I am not sure where it goes past those cities.
The Broken Arrow Expressway also goes E/W and, as far as i can tell, goes from Broken Arrow (practically a sister city anymore, but technically a suburb) to Downtown Tulsa.
The Turner Turnpike, and several other tollroads (Oklahoma has many) lead away from Tulsa to other major cities in the state.

Who are the local Native American tribes?
Sac and Fox, Cherokee, Osage, basically any you care to mention, but really not many are left, having been moved further West during the opening of Oklahoma to settlers.

It is the location of Oral Roberts University, which appears to be a fundamentalist Christian college.
nope, Claremore has that priviledge, but it does house some major expansions of the university, along with a peice of OSU and Tulsa University. add in the typical Technical schools and community colleges and you have a full house, not to mention the proximity to OU in Stillwater (is that the right university? i can never get them strait)

just what do the Texas Rangers play and why do they need an expansion team... come to that, what is an expansion team?
um, Baseball is the sport played by the Tulsa Drillers, former home of Sammy Sosa, and other than that i cant answer the last question.

the history of the town, the race riots piqued my interest... they might be worth an entry of their own
hmmm, you would need one to go into that stuff, Tulsa was once the 'OIL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD' and the Phillips Company was a major contributer to this.
Oh, and the name Tulsa came from the 'Tulsy Town' which it was known as when it was town-sized.

smiley - erm I just read the above... when did ORU move to Claremore? Did they vacate the entire campus on Lewis (including the ugly hands)? Admittedly I was still there when City of Faith went on the chopping block but the campus was still going then..

The Drillers are a farm team for St. Louis. They take the Cardinal's recruits & let them play minor league ball until they're ready for the majors. Expansion teams are usually in the majors and happen when a league is ready to expand into a new market.

OU is in Norman. OSU is in Stillwater. I never got that one right until I went to work with a bunch of people who bleed orange.

Joe's is okay but I don't think I would have made the drive for it. Now 'Pizza of the Gods' followed up by a steamer at The Dark Mave (now long closed) was well worth the drive... smiley - winkeye

But - and I mean this with all my being - the thing I really miss is ELMERS!!!! smiley - wah

Emee, out from under the rock

Well, I have a brother in school at OSU, so it isn't just for Joe's. I've heard good things about Elmer's but I usually go to Legends (formerly Slappy's) in Owasso or to Dink's in Bartlesville.

If you're ever in the 31st/Peoria area in Tulsa you should try Elmers. It really is good.

Something that was funny was a friend of mine from Tulsa, who I actually met in NYC after I left Tulsa, and I were walking down Broadway discussing restaurants (we were hungry). In unison we announced a craving for Elmers.
