You can trust that anyone (including the media) will do what is in their best interest. So, it is a simple matter of assessing what vested interest a source has in a story, and therefore what slant it will take.

I agree however with a standard news story, there should be no slant whatsoever. I find that certain newspapers are increasingly giving their pure news stories a spin and therefore distorting the truth. I hope that this practice becomes less prominent but I doubt it.

It would be impossible for a writer not to let zir personal beliefs affect an article. However, I do agree that they should not bias it on purpose...
