A Conversation for Talking Point: Blogs and the 'Blogosphere'

No more reason to fear blogs

To get to my point, I'll first address the questions posed by our editors.

This week, we want to ask you:
Do have a blog? If so, what's it about? What made you start a blog?
No

Do you follow the blogs of other people? What sort of blogs interest you?
No

What makes a good blog?
I'm not sure that the adjective 'good' has any meaning when related to blogs, much like 'are paintings good?' or 'are mountains good?'.

Are you increasingly using the 'blogosphere' as a news resource? Could it eventually replace the traditional media entirely?
I do not consider blogs to be 'news' resources. There is too much spin and opinion inherent in the process. Even established, 'professional' news resources are rampant with the problems, but to a lesser degree.

Do you use your h2g2 journal? If so, what appeals do you about it? If not, do you think you ever would?
Not much, because I barely find my own life interesting enough. I can't imagine anyone wanting to read about my activities.

Are you familiar with blog search engines such as Technorati? Do you have any tips to share about how you keep track of blog feeds and the latest news?
Nope!

Or... Are you a traditionalist who still uses pen and paper and thinks that diaries should be personal records?
I never kept a diary. The thought has occurred, on occasion, but I've never acted on it. I sometimes do keep notebooks of thoughts, ideas, or plans as a memory aid.

About blogs...
I can imagine some focussed blogs being useful endeavours, under conditions where the blogger has significant knowledge of a subject and is willing to share their expertise. I've enjoyed blog type pages of crafters, cooks, hobbyists, etc. who both know their subject thoroughly, and have useful info, tips and tricks to pass on.
Other subjects related to running businesses have proven interesting, and those on how to get the most out of computer applications, etc.

Blogs about one's personal POV and agenda hold little interest for me. I have enough of my own.

Thanks for the questions!smiley - cheers
