A583346 - 'The Archers' - an Everyday Tale of Country Folk

Desperately needs to be rewritten to remove time-sensitive statements such as "currently" and "recently"... See the thread entitled "Error!" for a comprehensive list of problems at the time of posting. smiley - erm

Blimey, Peet - well spotted! Are you volunteering to write an updated version to replace it? Judging by the breadth and depth of knowledge you've shown on the thread, I'd say you'd be the perfect person to come up with a far more entertaining, accurate and extensive Entry for the EG.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Number Six

I'll definitely consider it if nobody else wants to do it... smiley - smiley

It won't be for a month or so, though, as I have a huge amount of other committments to dodge first... smiley - biggrin

Hokay, I've drawn up an outline, and there's far too much info to fit on a "standard" guide page. (And that's just off the top of my head, without opening the two reference books sitting next to my left elbow! smiley - geek) Here's my proposal...

I'll write a replacement for the original article, which tells the history of the show, the purpose behind it and how it came into being. That will link to three new pages that will break down into:

1) The setting of the show and locations mentioned.

2) The cast of characters over the years

and

3) Noteable events, both in the fictional timeline and the real world, and how the show responded to them.

That shouldn't screw up any links, as the "header" article will assume the original number and link to the new pages...

It may take a few weeks to throw it together, and we'd have to put them all up at the same time, but if it sounds ok to you feel free to list it in the "In progress" list. smiley - ok

Just to let you know I haven't forgotten... I gathered reference material, wrote an outline (the "article" is currently 4 pages!), then I got busy elsewhere trying to help set up a Disabled Artists' Co-operative, followed by falling ill. (See journal for unpleasant details) I'm still not entirely well, but I need to return these reference books soon, so I'm going to have a stab at the first draft this weekend... Wish me luck... smiley - ill

Hi Peet!

Just in case you missed it somewhere along the line, there's an official Updating Scheme at UpdateForum if you are still interested in working on A583346.

Thanks! I did miss it...

My life has been unbelievably complicated for the last year or so, hence no progress beyond what you've seen already. smiley - blue I still have a pile of reference books next to me, though, and I keep promising myself I'll flesh out the outlines into four full pages.

There was enough in this week's episodes to merit an article on their own... smiley - yikessmiley - laugh

Okay, I'm confused. I went there and read all the way to the bottom of the page. There doesn't seem to be anywhere you can post so "stake a claim" for an entry you're updating, despite a mention of the possibility of two people wanting to update the same entry. Where do you post to say you're working on a particular project? smiley - erm

I don't think there *is* a way to register an interest in updating something... perhaps the only way would be to submit something, however sketchy, to the UpdateForum saying it's only work in progress but you wanted to avoid someone else wasting time working on a similar thing - would that work?

I understand your unconvinced expression, but is there a way to 'stake a claim' for something you're writing fresh for the EG and planning to submit to Peer Review? Seems to me it's always been the way that if someone else submits something else first and it gets picked ahead of yours, that's just the way it is...

I think Number 6 is right about posting a note in the <./>Update Forum</.> as a good place to start.

But if you're planning on working on an update, you ought to post a note with the original author and perhaps even something on the original Edited Entry so that people know an update is in the works (and it would allow for other would-be updaters to see the note as well).

Though I haven't seen a ground-swell of support for updating the Archers entry. smiley - winkeye
