It was here that I learned that they're not called "ball and stick" water towers, they're called: elevated sphere tanks. The other ones I grew up with are technically called "elevated toro tanks" and "fluted pillar tanks".

From the descriptions in the article, it sounds like the Manhattan ones are more ground tanks than the elevated tanks you see in the Midwest.

I've seen that parts of this entry have been clipped out to make a new entry on Water Towers in New York. Is the bit that's still up still to be considered for Peer Review? Or are you planning on working on it some more?

Thanks for your hawk-eyed scout vigilance. You are correct. I've excerpted part of it to be used in an entry about water towers in New York City. I'm planning to rework and elaborate a bit for a general entry now, but I think it's not really appropriate for Peer Review yet (well, at least for being accepted). Still, we can do it, and if anybody wants to organize a University project on infrastructures (eg, water towers, aqueducts, arches, transmission lines, etc), be my guest.

Just a mild thought: if you want to concentrate on a single type of water tower, why not just call the entry "Water Towers, USA" - like we have an entry now on "Customer Services, UK". If you do want to go global, in Cyprus they have socking huge water towers all over the place, which helps to manage short water shortages. Of course, it helps that people don't try and keep lawns...

aha - just spotted that this is precisely what you did with the other entry... and it's been picked by a scout too...
