A Conversation for Hermes Messenger Service Center

Not wanting to be a spoilsport, but why?

The idea of a separate message service looks nice, but why should I use it if I want the other to know who sent it?

First I have to find a researchers number(probably a hashed 42), also my own (hashed 42), create an email, send it to hotmail of all places, and the result is it being posted to a personal space where I could have posted it myself much faster. At my speedsmiley - run instead of Hermes' speedsmiley - whistle, and the whole community can read it anyhow.smiley - nahnah

I know the rules will probably forbid it, but a real nice smiley - coolservice would be a service to send a message to a researchers number that would be delivered at his e-mail adres. We all had to provide one, after all.
Except for the Hermes-employes(sworn to silencesmiley - bigeyes) the message would be a real secret, and the e-mail adresses would also be known the Hermes only.

It's most a bit of fun! ;-) You can have messages delivered anonymously, if you want it! (See http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F52345?thread=93691 for an example) I don't think it's a good idea if the HMS should send the greetings as emails, then everything would be outside h2g2, and what's the fun in that? (Of course it could be nice to have an email delivered anonymously, but it's not really fitting with "the h2g2 spirit", as I see it :-/)

Yes, it must be fun for you, or you would not do it.
I hope you realise the risks, if somebody sends anonymously a very nasty banning-type message, it will be one of you who will do the posting, so be sure to keep a copy of the original message (I like being a pessimist, you normally err on the positive sidesmiley - winkeye).

But that is beside the point.
My idea is not meant for anonymous messages, but could be used if you want to discuss in private, without the whole of h2g2 looking over your shoulder. A sender is necessary to be able to answer.
It might be used just for exchanging e-mail adresses, to keep even you out of it.
Whatever, it will probably never be realised, as I do not think you will be given access to the 'preferences-pages' of the researchers.

And have you allready pondered the installation of a Hermes-helpdesk, for complaints about anonymous spam? A great job to annoy peoplesmiley - smiley.

An extra addition.
I just had a look at the discussion of 'A modest proposal..' http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/A623288
What is the position of HMS if a banned person or anybody else from anywhere in the universe where they have e-mail, starts sending anonymous messages from outside to the hotmailadres with the correct format?

Not wanting to be a spoilsport, but again I think this was meant to be fun! ;-) I don't think anybody has promised to deliver any kind messages. It's rather easy to return the email, telling the sender that this kind of message won't be delivered. Well, that's what I would do anyway, but I'm not a very good Messenger since Hotmail don't like my browser! :-D I think the idea about emails should be an official h2g2 thing, instead of a "private" service. It has been discussed a number of times in various forms. Latest thread I could find about it, is http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/F47999?thread=131611 :-)

Ottox,
Look in the thread about e-mail problems. You were very angrysmiley - winkeye when Dragonfly did not pass on a message meant for herself.
See what I mean with everybody looking over your shoulder?

I will have a look in the official side, but not now, it is near midnight here.

I received mine, thankssmiley - ok!
It surprised me a little, sending anonymously a dutch sentence, and it arrived without problems.
The gist of it may have been clear, but I had expected that the moderators would have replaced it by their standard message, or that HMS would have returned it by e-mail with a comment like 'smiley - crossYour message has not been delivered, as it violated some rule of HMS and H2G2... ' and so on.
If it had been offensive, dragonfly would have been the one to post it, and not the sender. Don't worry, I made sure it wasn't.

Well, I would think that both Dragonfly and the moderator could understand enough of it to see that it isn't offending. smiley - winkeye

It's NOT against the house rules to post in other languages than English, but if the moderator doesn't understand it, he *can* remove it temporarily (and temporarily here can be months and years! smiley - winkeye).
