Here's a little nugget featuring the dinosaur carving at Angkor Wat, viewed and photographed by my daughter.

I do have one question - could you tweak this sentence, maybe?
>>Today the word 'dinosaur' is an umbrella term for the prehistoric creatures that lived on land, in the sea, and some, the pterosaurs, flew in the air.<<
That sentence sort of pivots in the middle, and it gave me brain freeze. Maybe...
'Today the word 'dinosaur' is an umbrella term used to describe prehistoric creatures that lived on land, sea, or air.'
I can't figure out how to work the word 'pterosaur' in there, though.
Also, the idea that the stegosaurus was discovered by a man with the Biblical name of Othniel fills me with unholy glee.

Certainly!
I have tweaked that sentence and added the link to pterosaurs on the word "air"
Yes, I thought someone might notice the name of the first Judge of Israel if I put the full name in, instead of just initials

I enjoyed reading this, GB. Most intriguing.
At first I didn't notice the things on its back (combs? Fins?) and I thought "that's just a boar". Which would concur with your little footnote. But then I had another look.
Could it, however, just be some animal which did actually exist in more modern times and has since become extinct? A relative of an anteater maybe? There is no sense of scale so it needn't be huge like the stegosaurus.
Or, as with many Western carvings, perhaps the artist just got bored with doing every day animals and made one up?
These hypotheses have probably been done to death, but it is fascinating how a little nugget like this can set you thinking and wondering.

Thanks Sasha!
Thanks TC - I had heard about the dinosaur carving previously but presumed it was a hoax. But then my daughter visited Angkor Wat and photographed it, so I knew I had to write about it. The number of guesses are numerous, and we don't know the size of the creature, although the skulls surrounding it intrigue me. I wish I'd been there to witness it myself...

One comment I have is could you link to A664607 on Richard Owen?
