Season of Love: Winter Goodbye
It's snowing hard, the ground is frozen.
I'm frozen, too, numb. Can't feel much.
The hole they put you in looks black against all that white. Flowers look wrong.
I resent those flowers. They'll live a few more days.
The kids drop me off at home. No, I'd rather be alone. Pat on the back.
I stamp snow off boots, come into the empty house, light a fire.
There's a last time for everything. Why don't we know?
The last meal. The last kiss. The last joke shared.
The last laugh is on us.
I pick up the poker.
And there it is, on the mantelpiece. That stupid Meissen set.
The Passionate Shepherd to His Love. Kitsch.
My first gift to you.
The fire must have thawed me out.
I'm melting around the eyes.
