i've noticed that ever since they introduced the single sign on this site's been really screwy (if there are any h2g2 tech guys here, i'm really sorry, but it's true! smiley - erm). the last time i surfed h2g2 at our faculty computer lab, i kept on getting those darned 'xml error' messages, and it was only by hitting the 'back' button and clicking the same link over and over that i could actually view the pages (i make it about 30 times in one hour!). so that could be what 'fonly's experiencing... i don't think there's a remedy for it at present.

Thanks Farlander for the reply.

If I may impose on you for a bit, since I've been on-line for quite a while and must log off now -(I will be back much later today or again tomorrow and would appreciate seeing a reply if possible) - and cannot search/read up on this at the moment, can you please tell me what does being a guild member mean? I know there's already a lot of very useful info, which isn't exclusively for members. Much obliged.smiley - smiley

hi 'fonly,

as far as i'm concerned, there aren't any real by-laws or guidelines about being a member. it's a good place to hang out and talk music (instruments/techniques/genres etc) with other people, and a good place to ask for advice where playing a difficult piece or buying equipment is concerned. or if you'd like to contribute to the guild, you could also write music-related articles - either as solo articles, or collaborative pieces with other guild members. for example, master b is currently managing this excellent project based on billy joel's 'we didn't start the fire'. and well... there's a great deal more....

why don't you come over and wander around for a bit? smiley - ok

Being a member means you can proudly wear the Guild badge on your Personal Space. After that, it's up to you! I suppose the main function of the Guild is to provide somewhere to find musical people to chat with, who might not be hanging round other forums such as AskH2G2. And then there are links on the Guild page to pages of interest, recent articles and musical conversations elsewhere on the site. If you have any suggestions for other things the Guild could be doing, let us know smiley - ok

Anyway, these are the two replies I've had so far to your query about the XML problem:

"I've seen that sometimes when a tag is missing. Not able to explain the
technical reason for it, but it's worth checking all the tags and
making sure you don't have an odd number of and tags..."

"It could be that the researcher has used tags. Unfortunately
these show up when you test a page even though they aren't tags that a user should be putting in themselves. So if someone does a straight copy and paste from a diagnostics page you get they error message."

If there's nothing in there of any use, and Farlander's advice (Morning, Farlander smiley - smiley) doesn't help, then I'll keep on trying!

Hi Farlander,

Thanks for a very useful and prompt response. I now have a better idea of what to do out there. Just before closing down I had a quick read about "Buying Guitars," which was useful up to a point. I've been neglecting guitar practice because there's a crack in the instrument (a Yamaha) due to dryness in the air (I used to leave it on the bed all day to keep it handy.) While it can still be played, there's a disturbing jangly sound which puts me off. I was making very good progress and have wasted several months' good work by delaying getting a replacement. Reading the article has made me hesitant about buying in hurry since I've now become aware of a number of things to consider when making a selection. I'm willing to spend up to $200 and would like an improvement on the Yamaha. There's a French brand that was mentioned to me recently but I've forgotten the name. Could the person have referred to the Ramirez (which of course sounds Spanish)?! I shall certainly be checking around on the Members' Page. Much obliged and smiley - cheers

Say, I am most happy to hear from the Master himself!smiley - cheers

Thank you for clarifying things and especially for the technical info, which will take me some time to try out before I can get back to you.

As you have called for a suggestion, what I'd find most interesting and useful is if we (i.e. those who choose to participate) could work on (for a start, as an experiment and for a minimum of three consecutive months) one substantial composition (for piano, in my case) together and up to performance level (best possible for an amateur, in my case). It would have to end up with us all playing one interpretation of the selected piece, which would have been reached after collective brainstorming, research and analysis of the participants. Would this be feasible?!smiley - erm

Looking forward to hearing from yousmiley - cheers

good morning to you too, danny! smiley - coffee i don't think missing tags explain the xml problems. as far as i'm concerned, you can't even add an entry if you've gotten your tags wrong (as i've learnt the extremely hard way - let us not forget that all my articles are over 1,000 words long!!! smiley - yikes). you keep on getting these 'error in guideml' pages followed by a preview of your text with corrections or pointers in red, and you keep on getting that until you've fixed every darned problem. i don't know what tags are, though, or why they are used, so i can't comment on that. but... haven't you ever encountered that 'xml error' thingy while trying to get into forums? it's when i click on conversation links that i get bounced to the 'xml error' page. or, alternatively, the page that says, 'bbc is trying to fix this page'. fortunately, i've been encountering less and less of these nowadays, which suggests that the matter is being dealt with.

'fonly - that's a very interesting idea smiley - ok i think somebody's made an attempt to do something like this in the past - sef, i think... it was an attempt to arrange the h2g2 theme into a theme-and-variations piece for orchestra - only the last time i had a look at it there was only one cello part and one clarinet?bassoon?something part. how would you like to go about this, and will the participants be playing it independently or together? (hmm, looks like a job for the virtual orchestra) if you could let us know what exactly you have in mind, maybe we could place a notice for this on the musicians' guild main page? (the only thing is that everybody participating in the project would probably need music sequencing software... not to mention quite a lot of spare time smiley - winkeye)

Hi 'Fonly-Idapa

Good luck with your project - if you can pull it off, perhaps we can try to get it adopted as the H2G2 (Earth Edition) theme! smiley - ok

When you have marshalled your thoughts, can I ask that you post them to a new conversation, rather than to this membership thread? As Farlander said, we can then advertise your idea on the Guild main page with a link to the dedicated conversation.

smiley - cheers

I'd like to join the Musician's Guild please!

1. I play the tuba, and given time (and the instrument to practice on) any brass instrument with valves. I can read both bass and treble clef.

2. As far as taste goes, I'll listen to just about anything, although I'm not a great fan of rap, and 'modern' RnB.

3. Good conversation, and the opportunity to play in some virtual concerts.

Hi,

I'd like to join the guild.

1. Instruments: I mainly play the lute but also occasionally try to play the renaissance guitar and cittern.

2. Favorite composers, bands and genres: were do I start?
Composers: John Dowland, Simone Molinaro and Alonso Mudarra
Bands: Blur, The Smiths and The Charlatans
Genre: Renaissance instrumental (especially english and spanish stuff) and indie.

3. The guild: I don't know, see what other people play, how they go about things, maybe contribute, more stuff about music before 1750, maybe.

smiley - ok

Pete.
