Offense vs. Defense
Bill^2 Started conversation Jan 17, 2001
The concept of the team at bat being the offense is somewhat a contentious one. Consider that in every major sport, the team that possesses the ball is the offense. In this sense, the batting team is actually the defense. It is the object of the batter to defend home plate from the ball, much in the same fashion that it is the object of a hockey or soccer (football, whatever) goalie to defend the goal from the ball. If a batter is successful in his defense of the plate, in the form of either a hit or a walk, the defense is granted the advantage of further players on the field.
