h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

It was the first Friday after the clocks changed back, and we'd all got that mild jet lag that happens twice a year. Officially the time was 4.30, but our body clocks thought we ought to be half-way home. So none of us wanted to work, and we ended up playing the Tom Swiftly game.

You know the sort of thing. You write a short piece of direct speech and bring it to life with an adverb, as in:

"I only have diamonds, clubs and spades," Tom said heartlessly.

“They had to amputate them both at the ankles," Tom said defeatedly.

Does anyone fancy joining in? You add a Tom Swiftly, post it and wait for the next person to add another. Here's one I thought up that afternoon, when I should have been working:

“Thank God it's Friday,” Tom said weakly.

I think I understand this game but please tell me if I am wrong.

"And tomorrow is the start of the weekend," Tom mentioned endlessly.

That's right.

You can also use other words that said. For instance,

"Your dog is making a lot of noise!" Tom barked.

"welcome to DOOM manor" tom mumbled

"I don't find boxer shorts very comfortable," said Tom briefly.

"just because im not as tall as you" said tom shortly

“Nurse, I shall need a scalpel for this patient,” Tom said sharply.
