Ok, I've never done this before and this is a sensitive topic for me as it is something I know something about and still have a problem with.

I would appreciate some help, this is a first draft which I have tried to spell check and isn't guideML'd yet but will be and I will add links later. I do know how to I think.

I couldn't find anything else like this in the guide but if its already been done I'm sorry.

Anyway... any help or ideas please...? I may not be on 24 7 but I will check back everyday honestly.

ok..... which button do I hit

That's ok, it takes some figuring out for all of us the first time. smiley - cheers

Have you seen the entry we currently have on Self Injury in the Edited Guide? It's at A603901.

I think this is an important topic, but we do generally try not to have more than one entry about the same thing in the Edited Guide -- and right now, there does seem to be a lot of overlap between this one and the A603901 one.

That's definitely not to say that we don't want yours, though! smiley - cheers One thing that you could consider doing is updating the A603901 entry to include the information you've presented here -- the process for doing that is a little different than Peer Review, but I'll walk you through it if you're interested.

Another thing you could do would be to tweak this a bit so that it focuses more on the kind of information that isn't in A603901. Does that make sense?

smiley - cheers
Mikey

smiley - blush having read that entry all the way through I see what you mean.

I could update that one, and sort of incorparate the things in my one that arent in that one, or I could update that one and make it more on what it is and make my one a focus more on how to help type thing, or smiley - erm I cant think of anymore ideas, I could get a milliion monkeys with typewriters to do it

Ok so I'm looking at updating the other one- the orginal writer hasnt been around for ages and neither has the orginal editor so if someone tells me the process I need to go through I'll be fiddling vaguely with it in word until then smiley - smiley

OK, so here are the steps. smiley - cheers

smiley - smiley First, drop by the author's (Inanna, I believe) space and leave her a message letting her know you're updating the entry. Even if the author doesn't seem to be around here any longer, it's still good form to let them know what you're up to.

smiley - smiley Next, create a new entry of your own. Copy and paste the old entry into it, and work from there. If you want to copy the GuideML and everything, you can go to <./>test603901</.> and copy it from there -- just leave out the ARTICLE and SUBJECT tags.

smiley - smiley Once you have added the information you think needs adding, made changes that you think need making, then submit the entry to the Update Forum. You do that the same way you submitted this to Peer Review, you just select "Update Forum" from the drop down list.

smiley - smiley Oh, and you can go ahead and remove this one from Peer Review. If you're not sure how to do that, go to PeerReview, find your entry on the list, and click on the 'x' or 'Remove' next to yours.

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

smiley - cheers
Mikey

I wanted to ask, I did look over the update page and bit and I wasnt sure- it said when you make changes you have to sort of back up why type thing-

on that entry there are alot of statistics that I thought were a bit overwhelming and not necessarily needed, is that reason enough for me to take them out ? smiley - erm

Well, they want a few different things there.

When you're first posting the entry to the Update Forum, they want to have a brief idea of why you think the entry needed updating.

Then, when it comes to the actual changes made, you'd definitely need to justify anything that involves changing the actual content of the original -- and taking stuff out definitely falls into that category.

I don't know that I think removing the statistics would necessarily make sense -- I think they are helpful, and do help give some context. It would be possible to rewrite the text there a bit to make it less overwhelming, perhaps?

Ok i see what you mean, I suppose it depends on the person and personally lots of statistics just kinda go over my head.

Ok, so should I just say I think it needs updating because having written a similar entry I think I can add to that one? smiley - erm

I'd just say a bit about what types of things you think you could add -- for example, here I think you could say that you'd like to add more specific details about how to help someone who self-injures.

Does that make sense?

I think the info you've added looks great. smiley - cheers

One thing you do need to do is to add the original author on as one of the co-authors of your version of the entry -- when you go to edit the entry, there's a box at the bottom for this, just stick her U-number in -- it's 32488.

Looking again at those statistics, what actually bothers me is not so much that they're overwhelming, it's that they are based on such a small sample size that they are actually pretty meaningless.

Based on some more valid sources, here are some numbers you might consider replacing those with something like this paragraph:

Several studies have found that about 4% of the general population reports having self-injured. When studies survey just those who are seeking mental health treatment, the rate rises to about 21%. Despite the common perception that it is mostly a female problem, that doesn't seem to be born out when looked at scientifically. It is, however, more common in people who have symptoms of anxiety or depression, and also in people have been victims of abuse or trauma.

You might also mention that self-injury is also very common in developmentally disabled individuals, but that what's going on there is generally seen to be very different than what is described in this entry.

Instead of saying "pills are not the answer" I would probably say "Pills alone are not the answer" -- for some people, medications can make a big difference in making it easier to learn new coping mechanisms. This seems to be especially true for those whose self-injuring is related to anxiety or depression.

Also, instead of just saying "counseling", I would probably mention that cognitive-behavioral therapy is a specific type of counseling that has been shown to be very helpful with self-injury, especially because it focuses on learning and practicing new coping mechanisms.

Thats what I thought I just couldnt put my finger on it - those statistics seemed meaningless somehow in the way they were put

Thankyou very much I'll look over it again and put it what you said smiley - smiley I did actually remember in the middle of the night I hadnt added her as a co-author but I was too lazy to get up and do it smiley - erm
