yes, there was a big 'to-do' across the pond about housing during that era. because of the automobile, however, folks were able to move further and further away from the city center into pre-manufactured 'little boxes made of ticky-tacky' as a popular song of that era described.
each house was basically the same, with just a driveway between two lots, but there was plenty of work to be found, building newer and better, fixing up the older, and inventing new.
by the time i came to be, the 'space race' was starting, with all the technology, computers and communication.
my father got back in to government work with the postal service out here 50 miles between the major cities, and rented out 'cottages' along this Great Lake named Erie that i can see out the back window of the belfry.
folks from 'the city' would rent the 'cottages' by the week, so i basically grew up as a beach bum.

great 'starter homes' or additions to existing homes, those prefabs. and the invention of aluminum siding made the outside of old homes look much better. in the long run, the Initial Investment is paying off if one is in a fairly stable situation......and who of us is, these days ?
risk vs. rewards, but when one can own a plot of dirt (at least in my case)the value keeps going up. (and so do the property taxes.)
