I used to be part of the team looking after the phone system that covers BAA including LHR. When i left (6 years ago) there were just under 8,000 phone extensions at LHR alone. Once you add in Gatwick, Stansted and managment offices that went up to 14,000. Thats just for the voice side of the systems.

yep... LHR's the biggest centre of employment in Europe - it pretty much keeps the Thames Valley economy afloat!
