I've just tried voting for a piece and a box appeared saying the following:

'Could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not properly installed.'

What do I do?

The Feedback Editorial also says the same. smiley - sadface Thus I have written here.

Opti, I guess it's a problem at your end (not sure though, as I've not tested it. Youz know the Post email address, just send it 'manually' (I guess you haven't installed Outlook). Write which category and whose piece you're voting for in the subject line like this:

Vote XXX's Poem(prose, vogon peom according to what it is). smiley - ok

If you're using Windows Vista then Outlook Express is no longer used or supported.
It's been replaced with the Windows Live systems which is not compatable to previous Outlook Express software.

This may be something the Post Team may need to look at and have a standard one stop e-mail address that doesn't require Outlook Express.

Can you test it from your Vista machine? I've always been with outlook, so I don't know what would happen if I didn't have outlook. Just exchange the subject line to let us know it's a test. Could you do that? smiley - hug

I have tested it already on the Vista PC and got the same message as Opti. I then went on to test it with other mail programs that use Outlook Express and they returned similar messages, one informing me I need to upgrade to windows live and provided a link to the MS Update page. smiley - ok

I meant to add, its also why I changed my default mail to Googlemail, I don't like a lot of the new Windows Live software, despite being a lifelong user of all things Windows. smiley - erm

Well, I've just had my son test this. He has Windows Vista and their Outlook replacement, the new 'Windows Mail'. It looks and works exactly as Outlook does. It worked without any problems. However, my son's quite smiley - rolleyes now because I went back three timesy to check. smiley - laugh

Is he using Windows Live mail? Not windows mail? You can use 'compatability mode' but there is no support or guarenttee that it will work.
I've just re run same tests with same results and same error messages.
If you recall, the last time I sent stuff for the Post I had to use the Direct mail method as the Outlook Express system didn't work then either.
As in the link I gave earlier, Outlook Express isn't even included in any version of Vista and is not available even as an add on.
I'm using IE8, Beta 2 on this machine as well and have to run it in compatability mode for IE7 to use the Windows Live stuff. That doesn't bode well when they issue IE8 next year. smiley - erm

Maybe it's called Windowes Live Mail - what's the difference? It's what came with Vista (like Outlook came with former windows versions).

And honestly, if the links don't work for a few, personally, I'd still give the comfortable option of these links to the majority. Everybodyx else can either just hover their mouse over the link and read the address in the bottom menue bar, or have a look at the guide ml page and copy and paste the link. Mind, this is just my presonal opinion as a user, not an official pov of the Post Team.

There's an explanation of the differences in the section 'Windows Live Mail' here.

http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/tips/internet/outlook_express_vista.php

I'm not going to try modifying anything too much on my Vista pc as I've spent too much time setting it up for the Uni course next year but having read through the MS help pages plus topics on this elsewhere, it's clear that Outlook Express is no longer a viable e-mail program and I can't find anyone or anything in the 'pc tech world' where they've got a version that works flawlessly in Vista OS.
Once Microsoft stop issuing support for a product then it's usually the 'death knell' for that product.

Yes, but then you don't actually need Outlook Express for this, as my son has shown. smiley - erm

Interesting.

First of all, there's no problem with the mailto: link. It works fine, and it's standard html. It's been coded like this since well before I joined the Team, and as far as I'm aware this is the first issue we've had with it.

The problem you're having is, simply, that your 'default mail client is not properly installed'. This basically means that your browser doesn't know how you want to send your email, or from which address (or, indeed, that you have no email program installed, or the one you have hasn't been set up yet).

I use Firefox all the time, so it's configured so that when I click on a mailto: link a new tab opens up from my Gmail. However, I rarely use IE - if I click on a mailto: link from IE, it doesn't know how I want to send the email because I've never bothered to set it either IE or Outlook to send email. I get the same error as Opti.

You can set any browser to use any email program you like, notwithstanding any compatibility issues - Thunderbird is a good free one that works on all platforms, for example. But I'm afraid you'll have to work out how to make it do that yourself. You could do worse than starting here smiley - winkeye:

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Could+not+perform+this+operation+because+the+default+mail+client+is+not+properly+installed

Failing that, hover over one of the email links and our address will be revealed smiley - ok

Hope this helps smiley - smiley

Okay, I've just spent the last hour or so switching between PC's.
*note to self, must get a wireless link for these systems, it's a pain doing it this way*
As Rich says, depending on which mail program you have set as default, whether in Vista or XP, the links will go to your mail program.
For whatever reason however, I still couldn't get Outlook Express to work via the links on the XP machine.
On the Vista machine when I used Windows Mail, (not Live mail), I got the same error but the links worked with Live mail. smiley - huh

Totally irrelevant to this, I've never used Outlook Express as a default mail program anyway going right back to Win95.

I think B'El's right it is probably my computer as she writes I do have smiley - thepost email address. How I hear you wonder, smiley - magic ? Well smiley - ok not quite but it appears that I have sent smiley - thepost items using my parents computer that has outlook and mine hasn't (well I'm assuming not). So I could use my parents to send in my votes and then have my computer whizzfather look at installing Outlook on my laptop (if it's not already smiley - erm). This may be an easier option for all. smiley - smileysmiley - ta for your help...I'm sure I'll be able to vote now. smiley - biggrin
