Hi Styx,

The Caves have to be there for you to explore. If I had put them on the other side of the River how would you be able to get into them from the Mosh Pit? It appears that they run underneath the whole town. How fascinating.

BTW, if you come across anything in the caves that you want to sell in Graphic Ants let me know.

Styx the Rat

*nods*

Caves don't care about what's on surface, Ant Lady. They go down even more than they go across, places even other rats won't follow me. They cross back and forth several times under your river.

Maybe river used to be underground. Still running water down there. old silt beds. Other things. Mosh pit is one way in and out, convenient for me. You don't worry about caves. Like I said, nobody attacking you.

*red eyes glow at other* Bluebottle. I don't go in your sewers any more but rats want out. They are trapped in there with rateating monsters! You should change you monsters or give rats a chance.

*scampers off*

It's natural selection at work, Styx. We have to do something to keep the rat population wiry and wily otherwise they'll grow thick and fat. And we don't want that, do we?

On to ther matters. Asteroid Lil posted this in another place but, being a pedANT as well as a pharaoh ant, I'm moving it to here:

Irv doesn't realise it yet, but he lives above the Aroma Cafe. He has to. How else can it be like Casablanca?
Speaking of the Aroma Cafe, I had a thought about map placement (sound of tiny screaming). What if the swimming pool went all the way into the corner and the cafe abutted onto it at 90 degrees? The blokes built the places practically together, so Irv would have naturally gone for the choice location, at the inner join of the ell. Which later grew into a town square.
This would have the path out the back door running at first parallel to the shore, then inward slightly toward CLI/The Atelier. CLI can't be too close to the rest of the commercial district, on account of its techno-industrial side. We don't want that too near the drainage field for Bluebottle's river. A second river to the east could comfortably accomodate CLI's needs as well as those of the proposed livery stable. (Odradek, I've recently learned, owns hunters IRL and does eventing; she's coming in on the stable)
I don't think that's too many rivers (look at Pittsburgh). After all we have mountains inland, so there must be snow melt. What you may have on your map is most of the "Old Town"

Amy's reply: I agree with everything you say except that I see no continuity need for the Aroma to be round the corner from the pool. On the map I will make the southern edge of the Town Square pink (rather than green) so that the Aroma can extend as far as it likes to the East and turn corners as it wishes. That leaves us with a nice big Town Square with an older end and a newer end (probably where h2g2 Towers is). Clicking on the edges of the map will lead to a page describing what *might* be beyond for the benefit of future mapmakers and continuity but everything is very flexible.

*thinks fondly about attempting a picture of h2g2 Towers but would need a lot of help*

I'm approaching the Temple of the Guide in the safari thread (although of course that doesn't bind reality in any other thread) and seeing it as a beautiful marble structure set in parklike grounds with cedars of lebanon and so forth. The towers might be separate, but with tunnels connecting to the Temple. The above-ground ceremonial entrance is read-only, if you follow my metaphor...

The cafe does seem to be expanding as regulars add pianos and statuary and hydrogen tanks and so forth. So, as you suggest.

Hydrogen tanks?!

I don't think any map can allow for those.

I have some helium if you want it. http://www.h2g2.com/A404542

There's enough room for any number of gnus to the South. Who knows what the coastline does? And the Beach is known to be five miles long.

Trust me I know what tiredness is! Many a time have I used my keyboard as a pillow...smiley - bigeyes Luckily I do shift work though, so I can afford to be up this late and still have plenty of sleep!

Anyway, you've done a fantastic job Amy! We couldn't ask for more (yet) {{{sorry...}}} smiley - winkeye

So, what can we do with it now? Do you consider it 100% finished?!

Amy the Ant - High Manzanilla of the Church of the Stuffed Olive

The map is finished as far as I am concerned. Of course it can stay on my server -- just lift the code. I'll put a link. I'll recycle the Draft Map entry for other draft maps!

The Beyond the Map page is not written yet but I'll keep that as one of my Guide Entries so that I can add to it from time to time.

Take it away. It's all yours. smiley - bigeyes

*applause*

If you could make a thumbnail, I would like to add it to the gallery. Otherwise, I'll just post a link. And the next map, when it's done, I'll perhaps be able to use as a "You Are Here", if you really are going to tackle the part with me in it.

Okay - now I plan to put the map on all the Waterworks pages. Together, the map & the waterworks will take over the world!

Irving Washington - Gone Writing

Just checked out the map. I'm quite happy to live above the Aroma, if needs be. I didn't think I had a house anywhere else. I love the map smiley - smiley

By the way -- this is probably on your "Beyond the Map" page, but I didn't read that too much -- is the Space Center represented?

Draft map

Post 59

Amy the Ant - High Manzanilla of the Church of the Stuffed Olive

The space center isn't represented on any of my stuff yet. Have you any idea where it is. I rather fancy that it's on the West coast of h2g2 Island (leave town via Bridge Street and keep going for about eight miles).

Irving Washington - Gone Writing

See... I'm not sure. I almost think it orbits ABOVE h2g2, but it could be in geosychonous orbit, and hover directly above, steadily enough to have something like a tube from "earth" to the station...
