for the helpfull advice yesterday about other sites to consider getting rid of when dis-then re-assembling Robert`s computer.I gave them to him &,well;the end result is a 'new'computer in R`s older 1`s 'body'.A computer-tech friend of R`s did the dis & re-assemble bits.Only thing now is that the printer/scanner/copier is now disconnected from R`s computer-& his friend didn`t know why.I`m hoping that its a tiny command not commanded/a yes-no ? not answered/just some small thingy that R will find when he gets the printer going again! I do wish he`d hurry-there`s a new colored ink thingy in it & I want to scan talk in color! so neugen ...

Hi Neugen.
I must confess I cannot remember the exact thread you talk about, there were a number of them the last days
Anyhow I am glad to be of service.
For the printer. Is it installed with all its drivers?
And is it parallel or USB? What OS are you using?
Sometimes the printer is much newer than the operating system, so there are no standard drivers with the OS, but there should be with the printer itself.
A search on google for 'printer type' and 'driver' might help.

There is another part you may have to check: the bios .
It is possible 'plug and pray' somehow got disabled. We also found once the com-ports set to 'off' . It took days before we realised why it refused to see a com-port at all

Well, our friend`s have decided to erase the problem by using another printer they have .the problem is that when R re-insalled 'Windows xp' it was w/a new home edition. Before he used 'Windows xp-2000'office edition-which is compatable w/the 3 in 1 printer.so instead of re-installing a 'Windows xp-2000' he`s just going to use a perfectly good copier he already has.The left-over new printer/scanner he intends to sell on E-bay. we just found that our new printer is the wrong brand to have-it`s a Lexmark(only cost 28$)but won`t print the black color anymore-so can`t be used for 'practical' things-like printing out coupons for good deals on things~~I would not touch a computer until last Jan.,then when i finally go on-line i discover hootoo . Now a month later I`m chatting about the incompatibility of using ('Windows xp 2002'home)with certain printer/scanner/`s (Lexmark is 1 of them)-the 'office-edition is needed.I`m still going to show Robert your suggestions-he did say that it installed w/out a problem.again! neugen

Good for you.
Only you got your OS crossed somehow.
First there was Windows 2000 (forgetting the previous ones for the moment) in a few versions, then came Windows XP (home and pro).
Both are based on on the old NT.
But don't worry, you will learn, as you obviously learned a lot in a short time
